HEALTHWATCH: Open Streets

An upcoming event is helping families hit the streets for a morning of fun without having to worry about vehicles.
Green Bay (WFRV) Hitting the streets on your bike does come with some risk from traffic and other distractions. An upcoming event is helping families hit the streets for a morning of fun without having to worry about vehicles.

Emergency room Doctor Steve Stroman has seen many victims of bicycle accidents in the emergency room at Aurora BayCare Medical Center.

"The most serious injury you would see is a head injury leading to death," said Dr. Steve Stroman, ER physician, Aurora BayCare Medical Center.

A helmet acts like a shock absorber for your head and brain.

"When you strike something with a helmet it's hopefully going to absorb the majority of the impact of that energy. And the energy if you don't dissipate it in some other fashion will go directly to the brain," explained Dr. Stroman.

That is one reason why BayCare Clinic is giving away 300 helmets, "with Concussions, disabilities, lifelong permanent injuries that can be easily prevented with a simple well fitted, inexpensive helmet," said Dr Stroman.

The helmets will be given out at the Aurora BayCare Open Streets Event.

"For people to come out in their community and ride their bikes, walk, jog, the streets are open just for that. It's closed off to traffic for that time period," said Randy Bailey, Stadium Bike, Supporting Sponsor.

The designated route is from Fisk Park to Whitney Park. Kids will also be shown the correct way how to put on a helmet.

"We want to make sure it covers the person's head not just touching the front or the back of their head. And then come down to the forehead. A lot of riders have it set up so the forehead is exposed. It doesn't really help you at all," explained Randy Bailey, Stadium Bike, Supporting Sponsor.

Aurora BayCare Open Streets is Saturday, May 31st from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. There will also be fun family fitness challenges along the way including the bike helmet giveaway kids fitness activities, bike safety check and zumba.
