HealthWatch (WFRV) The Aurora BayCare spooky sprint is coming up next month and they want to help people get ready for the event.
So if you're not a runner but have wanted to start, there is an easy way to ease into the sport.
Aurora BayCare's Couch to 5k Program can get you ready to hit the trail.
Lesley Bitters always had plenty of reasons why she never took up running.
"I don't think I have the endurance for that. I'll probably get too short of breath. How fun could that be? It hurts," explained Lesley Bitters, Couch to 5k Participant.
But now Lesley is training to run her first 5k, the Aurora Baycare Spooky Sprint.
"I decided this is the year to run the 5K, or give it a shot," said Lesley.
But she needed some help. So Lesley joined Aurora BayCare's Couch to 5K Program.
"It's an eight week program. It starts out really light, with some walking, and each week we upgrade the running and we go a little faster and a little longer each time. So that by the end of eight weeks, you can eventually do that 5k," explained Natasha Dorsey, Aurora BayCare Personal Trainer.
Leslie says it has really helped her start running. "It starts with a two minute run so it really ramps up gradually enough. And having the opportunity to build on those successes and say 'oh my god, I did it and I didn't pass out'," said Lesley.
The Spooky Sprint 5k /1 mile walk is a fun family event.
"It's a Halloween event so we are encouraging people to dress in costume. Our 1 mile route will be a trick or treat trail. We kind of wanted to make it more fun for the kids where we'll have six or eight stops along the way where we can do an activity, get some prizes," said Nick Olsen, Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine.
Proceeds from the event will support Greater Green Bay YMCA programs.
So far Lesley is down 40 pounds and is well on her way to tackling the 5k.
"I never would have imagined I could jog a mile now," declared Lesley.
It is not too late to join the Couch to 5k Program. The cost is only 10-bucks.
You have plenty of time to train for the Spooky Sprint. The 5k and 1 mile walk is Saturday, October 26th at Aurora BayCare Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center. It begins at 9 a.m.
