Green Bay, Wisconsin (WFRV) We typically eat and drink more during the holiday season. But there are ways to avoid the added weight.
As people get together to celebrate the holidays food and drink are plentiful.
"The average American can gain one to two pounds during the holiday season and it doesn't sound like a lot but actually most people don't take the amount of weight off during the next year so that can add up to a significant amount of weight gain," said Julie Erickson, Aurora BayCare Medical Center Registered Dietician.

First don't skip meals. "That's a big mistake people make. They tend to think 'Oh I'm going to a party, I'm going to save my calories and eat more when I'm there,' Eating regularly. Eating those healthy snacks and lunch can actually help you reduce your total calorie intake throughout the rest of the day," explained Erickson.
You don't have to deny yourself the good stuff, but practicing portion control is important. "So if you can fill half your plate with vegetables and then you have room for all those other treats but just make sure they're smaller amounts," said Erickson.
If you're hosting the party, you control the menu."Make sure that you have healthy choices. Kind of lightening up some of those traditional favorites using lower fat, less sugar," said Erickson.
Remember, those alcoholic beverages can add 100 to 350 calories a drink or more. So limit what you drink.
"Maybe alternating alcoholic beverages with nonalcoholic mocktails or other calorie free things in between each time you have an alcoholic beverage," said Erickson.
Finally, don't forget to exercise. " Make sure you keep your exercise routine as much as you can. Even just 30 minutes, 20 minutes anytime you can exercise is better than none at all," explained Erickson.
So just a little self control and planning ahead can mean fitting into your clothes in the new year.
