HealthWatch: Training for a 5K Spooky Sprint

HealthWatch (WFRV)  There are plenty of long distance and 5k runs left to participate in this year.  If you're out of shape and don't think you can participate in one, you may just need some motivation.

That is what Karen Miller found.  She is training to walk Aurora BayCare Medical Center's 5th annual Spooky Sprint.  The last time Karen walked a 5k was five years ago.

"My son and I came in dead last," jokes Karen.

Over the years, Karen gained weight and had tried many different diets unsuccessfully.

"I would have dramatic weight losses and I would inevitably gain the weight back with an additional ten pounds," said Karen.

Now at age 52, Karen decided enough is enough.  In May she  joined Aurora BayCare Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center's Fit for Life Program.

"I have two children and I felt very strongly that I wanted to live a long time and I knew I had to get my act in gear if I wanted to do that," explained Karen.

The weight loss clinic includes counseling on exercise and nutrition."It's a pretty rigorous program.  It's a sixth month program.  We run it Thursdays through Saturdays from 7:30 in the morning to 4:30 in the evening.  And we do lots of working out," explained Natasha Dorsey, Aurora BayCare Personal Trainer.

Karen lost forty pounds.  "I feel tremendously more healthy.  I used to be on medications for knee pain. I am no longer taking any more medications.  And I just feel good," said Karen.

And now everyone in the weight loss clinic will finish the 6 month program with a challenge, by participating in the Spooky Sprint.

"To really cross the finish line and say 'hey guys we went in to this together, we were unhappy, overweight and we are just thrilled and we lost quite a bit of weight.  And wow we are doing our first 5k which is pretty awesome',"

Karen is ready for the walk.  "I feel like I'm enjoying my life more than I had before and the Spooky Sprint is just one more way to enjoy myself and be active.  And it's a great example for me to set for my kids," said Karen proudly.

You still have time to train and sign up for the Spooky Sprint.  The 5k and 1 mile walk-run  is Saturday, October 26th at Aurora BayCare Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center.  The start time is 9 a.m.

The one mile includes a trick or treat trail for the kids.  Candy and activities are included. Costumes are encouraged.

The Fit For Life weight loss program is also open to anyone.
