Sub-Whale

Ingredients (serves 8-10)

1 large Italian loaf (traditional)

4 ounces mortadella

4 ounces sopressata

4 ounces capocollo

4 ounces provolone cheese

4 ounces Virginia ham

2 cups shredded romaine, and some whole leaves

1 tomato, sliced

1 small red onion, thinly sliced

Sliced cherry peppers, optional

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 teaspoons red wine vinegar

1 teaspoon dried oregano
Directions

1. Slice the bread in half lengthwise, cutting all the way through. Scoop some of the bread from the top half of the loaf. Layer the meats and cheese in the order listed. Top with lettuce, tomato, onion and cherry peppers, if using.

2. Whisk together the oil, vinegar, and oregano and drizzle over the inside of top half of the bread and meat side of the sandwich.

3. Choose some smaller romaine leaves for the "fins" and a slightly larger one for the "tail".
Slip them under the meats to hold them in place.
Use a 6 inch bamboo skewer to pierce the sandwich near the front. Stick the olive onto the end of the skewer as the periscope "eye".
