Area residents celebrate MLK Day

NWTC teams up with area schools to honor the civil rights icon
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV)--With Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday around the corner, area residents are celebrating the iconic civil right's leader this weekend.

Dozens of people came out to NWTC Saturday to honor MLK's birthday.

Each year the technical college teams up with other local schools to celebrate different ethnic backgrounds.

Laysa School of Dance performed this afternoon as well as the Hmong Community Dancers.

Leading up to the event students had the opporunity to compete in a competition for most inspirational poster.

This year's theme was a vision of peace.

"We're trying to emphasize that there is no race as we know it. There's no 5 race, no 4 race, there's only one race--the human rance. And we're all a member of that, the human race," said Dr. Alem Asres, a NWTC Prfoessor at the College of Diversity.

"Today I think is all about coming together and enjoying what we have and being very diverse and sharing one thing we have in common," said Nanny Xiong, an area high school student who was one of several poster winners.

The event ran from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.

This was the event's 19th year running.
