It is just the start of a west side facelift.
The former Cub Foods at the intersection of Mason Street and Military Avenue underwent a more than $3 million renovation, in hopes of attracting a national retailer like Burlington.
"It is an exciting day" says Burlington Store Manager, Diane Susor." We are so excited to be a part of this community, to help it grow".
National Retailer Burlington brought more than 60 jobs to Green Bay, with its new store.
"I think the extra jobs that they are bringing to the area, and the traffic they are bringing to military, I think all the businesses will benefit" says David Martin, with H.J. Martin and Son, Incorporated. The nearby business is also Burlington's landlord.
Filling the vacant Cub Foods is not the only transformation on Military Avenue.
"It has been a few years in the making but I think we are really seeing it come together right now" says Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt.
A recent road remodel, coupled with new construction is putting the spotlight on this shopping corridor.
"With Fox Communities going kiddy corner to our offices that is a positive impact on the community and with Burlington and we are working on a 2nd tenant space right now next to Burlington" Martin explains.
Last month, the Green Bay common council approved a request to create a business improvement district for Military Avenue.
"I think it is great that everyone bought into the program and they are all getting together to collectively revitalize Military Avenue" says Martin.
Businesses pay an extra tax to fund projects, events and promotion of the area.
"They are looking to hire someone to be the executive director of the Military Avenue Business Association" Mayor Schmitt says. "This person will really understand the long term vision, understand the product / business mix that they need there. You are going to see some activity taking place on Military in the next year at a much higher level".
Businesses on Military will start to see the benefits of the BID by next year, including landscaping and the addition of holiday decorations.
Green Bay already has three other BIDs: Downtown Green Bay Inc, Olde Main Street, and On Broadway Inc.
They are responsible for events like the successful Broadway Farmers market, Friday's on the Fox and Gallery Night.
