Cold weather advisories

It's important for anyone heading outdoors right about now to use common sense.
(WFRV) - It's important for anyone heading outdoors right about now to use common sense.

Layered clothing is a must, in order to help keep you warm, and protect your skin from exposure to the bitter cold. Skin and underlying tissues that are exposed may freeze, resulting in frostbite.

Local 5 spoke with one emergency room doctor at Theda Clark Medical Center, who is reminding people to just be careful.

"As temperatures drop, you lose feeling in your hands and feet," says Dr. Chris Hugo, with Theda Clark Medical Center, "and you don't even know it's happening. And when we re-warm those parts, it helps lessen the symptoms, but that's when people get pain, and they develop compilations from it."

Dr. Hugo also says the temperatures, and wind speed, play a big role in how long it takes before frostbite starts to set in.
