Alligator in stable condition after being rescued from a Sheboygan creek

"It was a very unique call," said one officer

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WFRV)-- Tucked in a creek behind Car Quest in Sheboygan was a rare and bizarre discovery--a four foot alligator.

"I would say it’s very rare," said Deputy Nathan Hatch with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department.

The alligator was spotted crossing Indiana Avenue just around 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

He was rescued by the Sheriff’s Department and the DNR.

“One of the officers had a catch pole and we were able to place the catch cable around the head of the alligator," said Deputy Hatch.

Officers said they used tape to wrap around the animal’s mouth to make sure no one was hurt.

Likely abandoned by its owner, the alligator was taken to Pine View Wildlife Center, in Fredonia, where he was treated for severe stress and dehydration.

“This morning the animal was given small samples of food and rehydrated at this point.  The vet will be in a few days to help with the assessment," said Jeannie Lord, the Executive Director of Pine View Wildlife Center.

Stories like this are becoming all too common for volunteers at Pine View.

“This unfortunately has become a regular occurrence.  A couple of years ago for example, we were called to Hartford for too much smaller camen were found in the river and someone had duct taped their noses," she said.

If found the owner is found they could be charged with releasing an invasive species into the environment as well as animal abuse.

Pine View is a non-profit organization and is always in need of supplies
