Getting ready for sturgeon season

The cold weather is having a positive impact for sturgeon season.
OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) - The cold weather is having a positive impact for sturgeon season.

Speakers can start cutting holes in the ice today on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes. Water clarity is considered excellent.

"You can't spear fish you can't see, so if you have dirty water, it's going to make for a down harvest," says Ryan Koenigs, a DNR sturgeon biologist. "This year, we were out yesterday checking water clarity. We had 14 to 16 feet of visibility throughout most of Lake Winnebago, so a lot of the lake people will actually be able to see bottom within the whole lake, though they'll be able to see within two to three feet of bottom."

The sturgeon season start this Saturday.
