MENASHA (WFRV) -- The Menasha Lock was re-opened in time for the July 4th weekend. However, less than 24 hours later a hinge pin broke once again causing problems for many boaters up-river.
Boaters were turned away after they learned about the Menasha Lock being broken a second time in 8 days. Some 500 boaters were expected to use the lock this weekend. A few made it through before this pin holding the more than 30,000 pound door gave-way.
About 20 water-crafts came through the lock Friday afternoon while Local 5 was there. When in operation the Menasha Lock is an attraction. It's something a lot of parents like to share with their kids.
Boaters trapped between Little Lake Butte des Morts and Lake Winnebago were offered rides back to where they needed to be according to Bob Stark with the Fox River Navigational System Authority.
Major upgrades to the 40-plus year-old Menasha Locks to keep this type of breakdown from happening in the future.
