Governor Scott Walker signed the bill into law Wednesday.
Currently, the “Move-Over Law” requires drivers to shift lanes or slow-down in order to provide a "safety zone" for a squad car, ambulance, fire truck, tow truck or highway maintenance vehicle that is stopped on the side of a road with its warning lights flashing.
Assembly Bill 803 extends the same protections to “any vehicle of a public utility, telecommunications carrier, or cooperative association…displaying one or more flashing amber lamps".
“Thanks to Governor Walker and a bipartisan group of legislators, Wisconsin utility workers will be offered the same protections as other emergency responders who are on the job,” according to Bill Skewes, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Utility Association. “We all appreciate the job our utility workers do when they’re out in dangerous conditions, day or night, working to restore power. It’s important for drivers to respect the room utility workers need to perform their job safely.”
