Scam alert from Appleton Police Department

The Appleton Police Department issued a scam warning today.
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - The Appleton Police Department issued a scam warning today.

It is reported that unsolicited calls are being received from an 876 area code phone number.

876 is the area code for Jamaica.

People receiving the calls are being told that they have won a large sum of money.

They are directed to go to a Walgreens store to purchase a "Vanilla Reload Card".

The caller directs the "winner" to put $300.00 on the card and to wait outside the store for a driver who will pick up the card.

The "winner" is told they will receive their lottery winnings within the next 5 days.

Here are some tips from the police department:

* If you have caller ID and see a call from the 876 area code, DON'T ANSWER!

* If you do answer, DON'T GIVE OUT PERSONAL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION (Name, DOB, SSN, Address).

* If you believe the call you answered is a scam, HANG UP!

* Ask yourself "IS THIS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?"

* Ask yourself "DID I SIGN UP FOR ANYTHING LOTTERY RELATED?"

* NEVER PURCHASE RELOADABLE DEBIT CARDS TO GIVE TO SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOW!

Police say debit cards such as the Vanillla Reload card are legitimate.  It is the way scammers use those cards that create the problem.
