GREEN BAY (WFRV) Sturgeon splashing near shore is a sure sign of spring in Wisconsin that dates back to the time of the dinosaurs. Sturgeon spawning on the Wolf River quickly became a big show for first time viewers.

"They were really big and long and different sizes," said one young, first time sturgeon watch, who only identified herself as Natalie.

The colder winter has slightly delayed this year's spawning run. But the higher water levels made it easier for Department of Natural Resources crews to net, measure and tag the sturgeon. Researchers say this weekend will make for ideal viewing conditions near New London and Shiocton.

"They'll probably spawn pretty heavy today and tomorrow here. By Sunday they'll probably be done spawning at this site," said Ryan Koenigs, Senior Fisheries Biologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Those flocking to the banks of the Wolf River say perfect spring conditions and the chance to see a show of nature that's centuries old proved to be an unbeatable combination

"They're pretty graceful. I thought they'd be pretty clumsy but they're very, very graceful in the water. It's beautiful," said George Hoffman of Weyauwega.

Danielle Chapman of New London called the sturgeon spawning a sure indication that winter has finally passed.

"After a long winter of being inside, it's fun to be outside and see these fish, especially the size to them. You know they're not like the little fish you catch in the river," she said.
