Teacher Accused of Sexually Assaulting a Child

A Green Bay teacher has been arrested by the Brown County Sheriff's Department.
GREEN BAY, Wisc. (WFRV) A Green Bay teacher has been arrested by the Brown County Sheriff's Department.

According to Lieutenant Jim Valley, 27-year-old Wayne Makela was arrested on multiple charges Tuesday.

Valley says his department was notified of a possible sexual assault of a child under the age of 16 that took place in the county.

The investigation led them to Makela who was then taken into custody and booked into the Brown County Jail.

Investigators are requesting the following charges:

2nd Degree Sexual Assault of a Child
Child Enticement
Use of a Computer to Facilitate a Child Sex Crime
Exposing a Child to Harmful Materials or Harmful Descriptions or Narrations
Sexual Assault by a School Staff Person or a person who works or volunteers with children

According to Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School website, Makela has been teaching at the school since 2008. He teaches computers for grades 5-8, as well as Confirmation class. He is also a substitute Math teacher and youth director.

Makela writes on the website, "I also coach the Boys A and B basketball teams, as well as helping coach soccer and baseball at NEW Lutheran High School.  I enjoy working with all the kids and families at Pilgrim!"

A spokesperson at Pilgrim Lutheran School says they will be issuing a statement shortly.

The Brown County Sheriff's Office continues to remind parents to monitor the phone and internet usage of their children and talk to them about internet safety.
