Two private schools in Shawano team up to add new technology in the classroom

SHAWNO Wis. WFRV-- St. James Lutheran School and Sacred Heart Catholic School, in Shawano, are putting aside their religious differences in an effort to put new technology in their classrooms.

Fr. Luke Ferris of Sacred Heart Parish said,“I think it’s good for our schools to see each other not as some sort of competition at all but rather really working in the same direction and do a good job with education and then inspire people with faith through our education.”

Both schools wanted to incorporate tablets and chrome books into their curriculum but knew it would cost a lot of money--roughly 9-hundred thousand dollars over five years.

By forming this parochial partnership the schools were able to qualify for a grant to get some of the costs covered.

Sacred Heart Catholic School Principal, Elisha Wagenson, said,“It’s really important in the 21st Century that students develop a well rounded education and they need to have a sense of technology literacy and you can’t develop that without access to technology.

“We’ve brought in a lot of new younger teachers.  Our younger teachers are so excited to share the world with the kids," said St. James Lutheran School Principal, Susan Longmire.

The schools have installed a new network that allows teachers to utilize the technology.

Mike Schumm teaches social studies at St. James he said this will completely change how his students learn.

“Something I want to introduce to the classroom is hooking up a web cam to the smart board and be able to…as we’re talking with maybe as we’re going through geography and social studies and actually talk to someone from another country that we’re talking about," he said.
