Wisconsin work zone awareness week

More and more construction projects start popping up this time of year.
WINNEBAGO Co, Wis. (WFRV) - More and more construction projects start popping up this time of year.

That means you need to keep an extra eye out for those on the job...

Today , marks the start of the 15th annual work zone awareness week.

It is a chance to remind driver to pay extra attention when navigating work zones.

This is an issue that is very close to home here in Winnebago County.

In March of 2006, Dan Melhorn and Marc Neumeyer, two Winnebago County highway employees were killed while working on Highway 41.

The two were filling pot holes.

In 2003, a Fond du Lac County highway worker was also killed by a driver on Highway 41.

Officials want you to keep these personal stories in mind when obeying work zone rules.

"Be safe around those work zones, they should be safe all the time, but pay attention. Get off your phone in work zones, slow down a little bit, be alert for changing road conditions, and message boards telling you you are changing lanes or things are going on ahead. So we ask people to be alert and be more cognizant of what's going on the road." says Ernest Winters,  with the Winnebago County Highway Department.

As always, it is important to remember fines double in all work zones.

This is also a good time to remind people of Wisconsin's move over law, which requires people to move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles.
