Empty boxes could lure in thieves

Residents might want to think twice before throwing away those expensive gift boxes.

Minneapolis, Minn. - Residents might want to think twice before throwing away those expensive gift boxes.

Police across the Midwest say if you're not careful, you may unknowingly invite unwanted guests into your home this holiday season.

Thieves see dollar signs in those empty boxes.

Police say burglaries are common around the holiday season, mainly because some people who can't give their own gifts steal from others.

To avoid being a victim, here are some tips:

1.) Have your neighbors keep an eye on your home when you leave.

2.) Don't throw away or recycle everything at once. Wait a few pick-up cycles.

3.) Beware of what you put in front of your windows. Police don't recommend that you put your tree right in your front window with tons of presents under or big items like T.V.s.
