Giving Tuesday

The holidays can be a time for consumption and spending, but now there's a way to give back.
GREEN BAY, Wisc. (WFRV) The holidays can be a time for consumption and spending, but now there's a way to give back.

"Giving Tuesday" is a nationwide movement to encourage people to donate to worthwhile causes. In it's inaugural year last year, #GivingTuesday drew donations to about 2,600 non-profit organizations.

Freedom House, a family homeless shelter in Green Bay, will take part this year and they're getting some extra help. Trudell Holdings, Inc. will be matching all donations to Freedom House up to $10,000.

"We have our up and down cycles just like other homeless shelters and other organizations out there that depend on community support," said Melissa Hyska, Donor Relations Specialist for Freedom House. "We're hoping that this is going to be that awesome reminder that after Thanksgiving holiday, with Black Friday, that it's still a time that you have to think about the people who do have less than us and just need that extra boost going into the winter season."

The Community Healthcare Foundation for Community Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls is another non-profit signed up for #GivingTuesday. Spokesperson Ann Senn says donations are key to getting the state of the art equipment to treat people close to home.

"It's really a way to connect with people that are using digital media, and be able to really spread the message far and wide a lot more than just an ad in the paper or what have you."
