The mayor is hoping to convince Walmart to amend its plans.
He has seen store designs in other cities that he says would fit much better downtown Green Bay.
The Mayor has been critical of a big box retailer moving into the Broadway District.
He says the region definitely needs a grocery store, because of an increase in residents.
However, Mayor Schmitt wants to see something other than a 150,000 square foot single story building with 700 asphalt parking spots.
"I think we are going to look back at that in 10 years and say what were we thinking. If we could make the right decisions today and get something a little more condensed, has great products and fits in with the Broadway District and that neighborhood, that is something I would be open to... I love eye to eye discussions so I love that they are making the effort, that they are coming up here and I have blocked the whole afternoon for them" Mayor Jim Schmitt says.
Walmart sent Local 5 this statement saying:
"Like we do with every project, we're meeting with the city of Green Bay and city officials to develop a store that will enhance the city's vision. This week, we hope to learn more about how our store can be part of the downtown green bay plan."
Tomorrow night, On Broadway is holding its annual meeting. It is at 5:30 at Titletown Brewery and open to the public.
District leaders say it is a chance to celebrate the last year and look ahead to the future, a future that may or may not include Walmart.
