Under Scrutiny: Local Business Closes Its Doors

A Greenville consignment shop is now closed, following a Local 5 investigation.
GREENVILLE, Wisc. (WFRV) A Greenville consignment shop is now closed, following a Local 5 investigation.
Unique Interiors and Consignment came under scrutiny after numerous people came forward saying they had been ripped off. The complainants all said they signed contracts with the store to have their items sold, but they weren't getting paid.

We first aired the story on October 7th. Since then, a flood of emails have been coming in from people saying they've also been duped.

Judy Orth was one of them. She says she took 2 truckloads of household items, including furniture and artwork, to Unique Interiors and Consignment. After two months, she contacted the store owner, Ken Cychosz, and was told her merchandise was stolen. In the end, she was given a check for $125, but believes she's owed so much more.

Store signs outside the shop are now taken down. A "Sorry We're Closed" sign now hangs on the front door. Most of the goods being consigned have been removed. Only a few items and a bunch of trash remain.

"I'm shocked that it went on this long. I would've expected somebody to have caught on to him by now. So that surprises me, but then again I didn't (catch on)," Judy said.

We tried contacting Cychosz at the store. A man identified as his "friend" told us Cychosz was not available. He also told us the store was "evidently" going to reopen somewhere else.

Phone calls to Cychosz were not returned.

Because of the numerous complaints coming in, victims are now being asked to contact the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. You can contact them either by phone (1-800-422-7128) or fill out a complaint online at www.datcp.wi.gov.
