UPDATE Principal Fired: State Investigating

The Green Bay Area Public School District has issued a statement following the firing of Nicolet Elementary Principal Melisa Ellingson.
GREEN BAY, Wisc. (WFRV) The Green Bay Area Public School District has issued a statement following the firing of Nicolet Elementary Principal, Melisa Ellingson.

"In the Green Bay Area Public School District, the safety of our students and staff members is our number one priority. On October 18, 2013, Rebecca Swanson was named Interim Principal of Nicolet Elementary School, in light of former principal Melisa Ellingson's termination on October 16, 2013. As a district, we want to assure our families that at no time during Ms. Ellingson's employment with the district, was the safety or education of students and staff compromised. A letter was sent home to Nicolet families on October 18, 2013 that announced Rebecca Swanson as the new interim principal."

"For protection of privacy and to stay compliant with confidentiality protocol, we cannot elaborate further on reasons for the termination. In all cases, district employees are dealt with fairly using standard district protocol. Melisa Ellingson had been with the district since August of 2011."

Local 5's Wendy Fleury brought Ellingson's termination to light in a Local 5 Exclusive Wednesday morning.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction told her that Ellingson's licensure status came under investigation after she was terminated from the district. They issued this statement:

"By state law, during the investigation, the DPI shall keep confidential all information pertaining to the investigation except the fact that an investigation is being conducted and the date of a potential revocation hearing, should it be determined that a hearing is needed."

A letter went out to parents of Nicolet Elementary students two days after Ellingson was fired. The letter did not say anything about that matter. It only announced a new interim principal.

Local 5 will continue to stay on this story and bring you the latest details as they become available.
