Of note injury wise, WR Jordy Nelson (knee) and TE Andrew Quarless (quad) were notable additions to the "did not practice list." Nelson banged his knee at practice a few days ago. McCarthy said after practice it was a re-occurrence of an old injury and his wide out is still being evaluated. Quarless could miss a few days with his injury. MLB Brad Joes dropped out of practice early with a finger injury and is still being evaluated.
The punt return and kick return jobs continue to be a battle to watch day in and day out. Today as many as six players were back returning punts during a special teams portion of practice. WR Randall Cobb led the way, followed by WR Jeremy Ross, RB Johnathan Franklin, WR Myles White, WR Tyrone Walker, and WR Omarius Hines.
Several wide receivers stood out during practice Friday and the common denominator was Aaron Rodgers delivering the football. Rodgers continues to make a habit of beating the defense and in the "Combo" period Rodgers connected on a beautiful back-shoulder throw to White. Later he connected with Walker on a deep ball that went for a score, and Rodgers drilled in a bullet over the middle to Hines to beat tight coverage from Loyce Means. Let's just say it looks like #12 is in mid-season form when it comes to accuracy.
Wide receiver Jarrett Boykin had maybe the two best plays of the night. First during the "Combo" period he corralled a B.J. Coleman pass thrown behind him with a beautiful one-handed grab. Then in a "Team Run" drill, Rodgers used play-action and connected deep with Boykin who laid to make a diving catch past CB Davon House.
A big defensive play came later in that period, when DE Johnny Jolly forced a fumble on an Alex Green running play. A.J. Hawk and T.J. Lang got into it after the drill, before a whistle signaling a "TV timeout" broke that up.
"I thought it was a good practice," McCarthy said afterward. "I thought the energy was where it needs to be. It's our 7th install practice of 8, so I feel very good about where we are schematically. Curious to see where the mental errors will come out when we evaluate the film because that might have been a little high. It's just something as you go through training camp, you can see your team coming in sync, I thought we definitely took a step towards that today."
