8-8 Packers Training Camp Report: Pre-Preason Practice

The Packers held their final practice before the preseason opener Friday vs. Arizona

(WFRV-TV) - The Packers are preparing to host the Arizona Cardinals in their preseason opener at 7 p.m. Friday night.  Green Bay ditched the pads and held its shortest practice of Training Camp Thursday, mostly consisting of jog-throughs and special teams work.

A couple of new additions to the injury report come on the offensive line.  Starting right guard T.J. Lang sat out with a back injury stemming from a “pretty good collision yesterday at practice” according to Head Coach Mike McCarthy.  Second year tackle/guard Andrew Datko missed today’s work with a concussion.  Guard Lane Taylor missed practice for personal reasons, while RB Eddy Lacy remained out with a hamstring issue.  Randall Cobb once again took limited reps at WR with a biceps injury.  In the locker room he said he would play tomorrow night if it’s up to him.

Mike McCarthy did not go into details about which injured players would be able to play Friday.  One thing to watch for, the Packers Head Coach said he’d like to get all four of his QB’s in the game at some point.  That includes Vince Young, who only started practicing two days ago.  Young said in the locker room that he is excited to play and would just have to come up with a plan with coaches on plays he is comfortable with at this time.  As far as the kickers go, McCarthy said Mason Crosby and Giorgio Tavecchio will get “balanced” work during the preseason but didn’t specify a certain plan.

McCarthy is hopeful not to have to go with only nine offensive linemen like he had at practice Thursday because that would put players in positions they haven’t worked much in during camp.  One player to watch vs. Arizona will be new left tackle David Bakhtiari.  The rookie Bakhtiari will certainly play more than the rest of the veteran offensive line to get acclimated to the speed and pace of the game.  As far as the rest of the #1 offense, expect to see all healthy players start the game, but don’t expect to see them for very long.

We’ll have more on what the players had to say about the preseason opener coming up on Local 5 at 5, 6, and 10.
