Mike McCarthy on Injury Prevention, Greg Jennings, & more on Eve of Training Camp

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy was not pleased with the rhythm  and timing of his team after last training camp, and injuries were a big reason for the inconsistency.

This year McCarthy says he and his staff have made 6 to 7 adjustments to the way training camp will be conducted to help cut back on injuries this time of year.

"I have all the confidence that we will do a better job being healthier," McCarthy said.  "We have building blocks in our program and one of them is availability and accountability, and we have not hit the target on availability two out of the last three years."

McCarthy had a tongue-in-cheek reply to all the comments former Packers WR and new Minnesota Viking Greg Jennings has been making lately about his former team.

"You know, when you put on that purple, something happens to you.," McCarthy joked.  "I don't know. Greg was a great player for us, we had a lot of great moments, and he was fun to coach."

Jennings recently made comments that the team is all about quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and insinuated that the Packers signal caller put all the spotlight on himself.

McCarthy was asked Thursday how Rodgers has grown as a leader.

"Everybody grows and hits some bumps and twists and turns along the way," McCarthy said. "But he is very committed, very in-tune with what is in the best interest of the football team. I'm very proud of him, just the way he has taken that responsibility and feels that it's going to be greater than ever this season."

One of the big changes to camp this year is the early practice schedule.  19 practices will be held in the a.m. as opposed to the scattered schedule from a year ago.

"Get your heavy lifting done in the morning," McCarthy said. "And so we were always doing that in-season. I felt over the years it was really helpful and I thought our continuity in-season is probably one of the strengths of our program and just how we really go about our business."
