Packers Training Camp Report 7-31-14

The Packers practiced in pads for the second consecutive day Thursday
(WFRV-TV) - The Packers were in pads for consecutive days for the first time in training camp Thursday, and got padded work for the third straight practices overall.  The team is continuing with its installs as they prepare for Family Night at Lambeau Field on Saturday.

INJURY REPORT:  A day after missing the majority of practice with an ankle injury, safety Morgan Burnett was out Thursday and not participating.  The safety group was thin as undrafted free agent Tanner Miller also was out with an ankle injury.  DE Jerely Worthy (back), DT Letroy Guion (hamstring), WR Jeff Janis (illness) have not gotten on the field for training camp and continue to be out.  The one player who was able to return for the first time Thursday was OLB/DE Nick Perry.  Perry participated in drill work and team periods, and Mike McCarthy says there are no restrictions on him or Mike Neal, who returned yesterday.  Guard T.J. Lang (shoulder) worked with the first team offensive line after being limited the past few days.

Practice:  The first thing that was evident upon arrival Thursday was the appearance of real NFL referees, including the infamous Ed Hochuli.  Every year there are new rules, or current rules that will be emphasized more, and players had the chance to interact with officials today on those things.  Word around the league is defense holding and grabbing of the wide receiver's jersey will be a penalty called more frequently and watched closer this season.  There were plenty of flags on the field during team sessions.  New Packers WR Gerrard Sheppard at practice, a day after being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens.  The offensive and defensive lines battled in the always entertaining and energetic "half-line drill" Thursday.  Both lines work on running the ball and stuffing the run, leading to a lot of collisions and chatter among players.  CB Casey Hayward has looked great in his return from hamstring issues last year, but he was the victim of two great offensive plays Thursday.  First Jordy Nelson hauled in a 50 yard pass from Aaron Rodgers by going up over Hayward for the contested catch.  Then later in practice, Scott Tolzien launched deep down the left sideline and got out-leaped by WR Alex Gillett for a big gain.  There's been a lot of talk about safeties Micah Hyde and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix competing for reps in the secondary, but Sean Richardson has also stood out with the only two interceptions of the group in camp, including one off a tipped pass deflected by Davon House Thursday.

What's next?  The Packers return to practice Friday at 8:20 a.m.
