Terrific Teacher 6/16/2011
Earlier this month the Centers for Disease Control released new data showing obesity affects 17 percent of American kids. Now, a school on the lakeshore is pushing the desks out of the way for a new exercise program. Classrooms at Monroe Elementary School in Manitowoc are tuned in for their daily Phit Kast, thanks to their local YMCA. Brian Collins came up with the interactive workout because tight budgets have forced schools around the nation to trim back their fitness programs. The third and fourth graders involved only get one recess a day, and Phy Ed class is limited to two or three times a week. Every morning they tune in for their live 15 minute Phit Kast. When the program started some of the kids couldn't do one push up, now they can do more than 100 and have improved flexibility and coordination. Millaine Wells reports.
