HealthWatch: Pregnancy Welcome Visit

Green Bay (WFRV) Having a baby is a very exciting time- but it can also be scary when a couple has a lot of unanswered questions for their doctor. A program at one area hospital is helping guide parents through the pregnancy.

Aurora BayCare Medical Center offers a 'pregnancy welcome visit' to help answer expecting parents questions and guide them through this exciting time in their life.

Jordan and Beth Antinoja are expecting their first baby, "Mostly excited, somewhat terrified," said Beth Antinoja, Green Bay.

Beth and Jordan chose to travel through their journey with Aurora BayCare Medical Center. As first time parents-to-be Beth and Jordan weren't sure where to start, "So I called and said "I have a positive test what do I do?"  And they just directed us from there," explained Beth.

Most OB-GYNS wait to see a patient until they are in the 8th to12th week of pregnancy. Aurora BayCare offers a 'pregnancy welcome visit' which gets patients in within 3 business days, "They meet with a nurse and when the nurse is talking to them they call us over too and they want us to talk to the patient and kind of tell them about our program here," explained Dr. Donald Sipes, obstetrician-gynecologist, Aurora BayCare Medical Center.

The couple was thrilled with their first visit, "It was really awesome because we otherwise wouldn't have come in until week 8 and we had a lot of questions before that," said Beth.

The couple says their first pregnancy welcome visit was very informative, "We got a bunch of literature on what to expect for the upcoming 9 months, what various doctors appointments would look like, when we would have ultrasounds vs when we would just come in and hear the heartbeat," said Beth.

And they got to meet an OB-GYN, "It also gives a face to face. They feel more, I think, relieved meeting one of us not in the situation where we're actually doing the exam and everything it's more of a relaxed situation," explained Dr. Sipes.

Beth agrees, "He's answered all my questions he's always smiling, always been helpful."

Dr. Sipes says Aurora BayCare is the only hospital in the area to offer every type of OB-GYN specialist, "We have maternal fetal medicine, we have euro-gynocology, we have gynecologic oncology, there's regular obstetricians, we have reproductive endocrinology," explained Dr. Sipes.

The couple is ready to welcome their baby girl in June, "I hope so, hahah. Yes I think so . Yeah I think you are," said Jordan to his wife.

And the welcome visit helped prepare them, "I think all the anticipation and the feeling of being overwhelmed was relieved when we came in for that first appointment," said Beth.

Dr. Sipes says Aurora BayCare is the only hospital in the area that offers a program with an OB-GYN in house 24-7, 365 days a year.
