ALLOUEZ, Wis. (WFRV) An Allouez man is watching the developments in the Middle East closely. His daughter arrived in Jerusalem just before the fighting began.
Henry Zimmern says his daughter is an adult and she makes her own decisions. However, as a father, right now, he cannot help but be concerned.
As the fighting between Israel and Hamas continues in the Middle East, Henry Zimmern watches the news from his home in Allouez and prays his daughter stays out of harm's way.
"We are always concerned, it's a war zone," said Zimmern. "Need to be concerned, we do not take it lightly."
Zimmern's 21-year old daughter Alexandra is in Israel enrolled on a six-week summer school program in Jerusalem. She arrived in late June, roughly one week before the fighting broke out. Since then she has experienced firsthand the reality of war.
"You'll hear the boom, you'll hear the walls shake, yeah as an American, as any person, it's pretty terrifying," said Alexandra.
The majority of those explosions are from the Iron Dome, Israel's missile defense system used to shoot down the missiles sent by Hamas. A sight Alexandra has seen numerous times at night in the war-torn region.
"Jerusalem is fairly safe," said the concerned father. "But there are rockets she has seen at night when she goes on her balcony, she sees Gaza all lit up - with what's going on there."
After the fighting began, Henry Zimmern called his daughter in an attempt to bring her back home.
However, he will feel much better when she returns to Wisconsin in mid-August.
