ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV)--Hunters are gearing up for the deer hunt opener this weekend.

Thursday, Cabela's was packed with people buying last minute items for the hunt.

Cabela’s Marketing Manager, Jorge Suarez, said “The excitement in the air for deer season reminds you where you live.”

This will be the first time the Green Bay area store is open for the kick off and they’re expecting thousands of people to come through this week.

“Anybody heading North, whether it’s the Northwoods, or anywhere in Northeast Wisconsin, they’ve got to go by Cabela’s.  Any last minute thing they’ve forgotten it’s an easy drop off Lombardi," said Suarez.

So what are this year’s must have items?  From basics like blaze orange jackets to high tech camouflage cameras--Cabela's has it all.

Cabela’s Hunting Lead, Tyler Verhagen, said  “The trail cameras are set on a motion censor.  When they sense motion there’s a split second then they’ll wait and actually take a picture so the deer has time to talk into the camera.”

But the hunt is more than just about bagging bucks.

“Going hunting with the kids.  Getting together and they they’ll stay for Thanksgiving.  We’ll all just get together.  IT’s the holiday start and that time of year," said Tom Schroder.

Josh Kamin is headed up to Antigo where he's originally from to hunt this weekend.

Getting together with friends is a tradition.

“High school friends—we’ve been hunting for years.  So it will be good to get back together with them all and have a good time like we always used to.”

The deer hunt opener begins Saturday.
