(WFRV) - Door County is now the 22nd county in Wisconsin that has been quarantined for Emerald Ash Borer.
The state Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection says the Ash Borer has been discovered in the Town of Gibralter, near Egg Harbor.
The quarantine applies to all of Door county. It prohibits ash wood products and firewood from being moved out of the county. The quarantine means Door County residents and tourists can't take firewood from Door County to other counties. It also means businesses that handle wood products will have to work with the DATCP to ensure their products are not infested.
If you live in Door County and you have ash trees, the DATCP says you need to follow these recommendations:
- Keep a close watch for possible signs of EAB infestation: Thinning canopy, D-shaped holes in the bark, cracked bark, branches sprouting low on the trunk, and woodpeckers pulling at bark.
- Consider preventive treatments if your property is within 15 miles of a known infestation.
- Consider planting different species of trees that are not susceptible to EAB.
- Call a professional arborist, and visit emeraldashborer.wi.gov for detailed information.
