(WFRV) - Having a disability can give one a feeling of low self esteem and self worth, but a local rehab center is giving those with disabilities the skills they need to give them purpose and meaning.
For over 65 years, N.E.W. Curative Rehab in Green Bay has been helping people, achieve independence.
"Everybody wants to be as independent as possible," says Diana Brown, with N.E.W. Curative Rehab. "Everybody wants to be proud of their accomplishments."
The largest provider of adult day care services in the state, serving adults with disabilities, as well as those with dementia, memory impairment, and traumatic brain injury.
"They come to our program during the day, and that allows their loved ones, or their caregivers to do errands, take care of business at home, have a relief from care-giving while their loved one is here having a good time, and participating in activities, and getting the assistance they need," says Brown.
Helping those in the community is all about adaptation, and self pride.
"We also do employment and training services where we help people with disabilities get jobs out in the community," Brown says.
From Brown County to Manitowoc, Sheboygan County to Door, N.E.W. Curative puts the ability into disability, at a cost of $6 to $7 an hour. The rehab center has seen, on average, people get an additional two years of independent living by using the center's support services .
"We're all people," Brown says. "We're all just the same, and just because i might have had something happen to me, or i have a disease or a disability, I'm still that same person, and we just all learn from each other, we all support each other."
The facility also reaches out into the community, helping people with things like grocery shopping, and cooking meals at home.
