TOWN OF WILSON, Wis. (WFRV) A proposed golf course in Sheboygan County was the subject of a public hearing Wednesday night. In these early stages of planning, the possible impact on the environment has many people talking.

The Kohler Company wants to build an 18-hole golf course near Lake Michigan, on land they have owned more than 75 years.

Within this 247-acre parcel of land in the Town of Wilson, the Kohler Company hopes to build a fifth, 18-hole golf course.

"It's a special piece of property and a property we think can be ultimately developed into one of the top 50 golf course in the world upon maturity," said Michael Belot of Kohler Company.

Owned by the Kohler family for decades - undeveloped and wild - bordering Kohler-Andre State Park.

And while Belot says it is zoned for recreational use, some local residents worry about the possible environmental impacts caused by extensive construction.

"Our biggest concern is it doesn't fit in whatsoever with our 20 year comprehensive plan," said Mary Faydash.

Faydash is with Friends of the Black River Forest - a group of residents who say a golf course here could damage wetlands and endanger the fragile forest.

"There is going to be construction run off, pesticide, herbicide, fertilizer run-off," said Faydash.

However, Belot says Kohler Company is just as concerned - announcing recently that it will seek Audubon Signature Course certification.

"Preserving natural resources, preserving and protecting water, enhancing wildlife," said Belot.

However, at Wednesday's public hearing - Faydash urged the Town of Wilson plan commission to block the project and protect the community.

"It's our quality of life were talking about," said Faydash. "The huge impact on the environment regardless of what they say about being certified

Kohler is seeking a conditional use permit from the town to move forward. The company also needs state and federal approval.
