Anxious to develop former Hamilton Manufacturing site in Two Rivers

TWO RIVERS, Wis. (WFRV) - City leaders in Two Rivers are anxious to redevelop waterfront property where Hamilton Manufacturing once stood. But as Local 5's Kris Schuller reports the city has had difficulty working with the property's current owners.

In the heart of Two Rivers find 12 acres of waterfront property where Hamilton Manufacturing once stood. It is valuable land, ready for development and Greg Buckley says his city has a plan to proceed, unlike the present owners.

“This property, properly redeveloped could be a phenomenal centerpiece for a resurgence in Two Rivers,” said Buckley, Two Rivers city manager.

In 2012 the owner of Hamilton, Thermo Fisher Scientific, closed the plant and later tore it down.  But while attempts have been made by Two Rivers to work together with Fisher on this property’s future, Fisher has had little to say.

“If they have some vision that's counter to what we adopted we'd like to know what that is,” said Alderman Patrick Gagnon.

As proposed in a redevelopment plan approved last fall, Two Rivers wants to restore streets closed here decades ago with a vote by City Council. It’s a move a Fisher spokesperson responded to calling it "premature in the absence  of any specific plans for the development of the property."

“Our response as a community,  is we have a responsibility to plan for the future,” Buckley said.

Yet Buckley says in consideration to Fisher, that vote has been delayed until May. And Fisher has until then to submit their own development plan.

“Twelve acres of green grass in the middle of our city isn't what we need,” Buckley said.

The city manager says while he'd prefer a working partnership with Fisher, if needed he'll consider using eminent domain to restore these streets removed so long ago.

“Our preference is to work cooperatively with the company but it's fair to say the city is mindful of the tools that are available to us,” Buckley said.
