Appleton, Wis.(WFRV)- A gang of Russian hackers appears to have pulled off the largest known online data security breach.
Hold Security out of Milwaukee, which is a cyber security firm says the Russian hackers have stolen 1.2 billion unique username and password combinations. That includes more than 500 million email addresses collected from 420,000 different websites. With about 2.5 billion internet users worldwide, it's possible that half of them may be victims.
Local officials with the Better Business Bureau say it's all about having a strong password and changing it often.
Authorities say it's nearly impossible to catch the cyber thieves, and even harder to prosecute them.
