Body found on Manitowoc County beach that of missing boater

UPDATE: September 28, 2016, 1:30 p.m. 

An autopsy confirmed that the body found Tuesday is the man that went missing when his sailboat capsized on September 11. 

Francis Knipp, 75 of Manitowoc, was reported missing after his boat was found earlier in the month near Manitowoc. 

The coroner's officer says that his preliminary cause of death is drowning pending toxicology reports. 

No foul play is expected. 


The Manitowoc County Sheriff's office is working to identify a body that was found on the shore of Lake Michigan  Tuesday afternoon. 

Deputies say the body was found just after noon near the 5700 block of Lakeshore Road in the Town of Newton. 

So far, no information about the body, or its identity has been released. 

Local 5 News will update this story as more details come available. 

The discovery comes two weeks after a sailboat capsized off the coast of Two Rivers on September 12th. 

The Manitowoc County Sheriff's department and the Coast Guard was looking for a man who was reportedly in the boat when it capsized and has been missing. 

So far, there is no word on whether the two incidents are connected.
