Four charged in meth bust in Berlin

BERLIN, Wis. -  Police in Berlin have released more information about a meth bust last month.

On June 9th, Berlin Police pulled over a man for a seatbelt violation. While speaking with the driver during the traffic stop, the officer noticed the driver was very nervous with a sweaty, shiny face and shaky hands.

After calling in a K9 officer for suspicion of drugs, officers searched the vehicle and found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Further investigation led officers to the man's house on 135 S. Swetting Street in Berlin, where police say a "one-pot" meth lab was found. Special agents from the Wisconsin Department of Justice were called in to help properly dispose of the potentially volatile chemicals used during the production of meth.

Officers discovered that young children lived in the home. They were taken to a local hospital, where tests revealed that they were exposed to high levels of meth.

Russell G. Barton, 32, of Fond du Lac, faces tentative charges of possession of meth and possession of meth paraphernal. Shawn D. Ellis, 43, of Berlin, faces tentative charges of manufacturing meth, possession of meth waste, possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia to manufacture meth and maintaining a drug trafficking place.

"This was great old fashion police work done by officers that night," said Berlin Police Department Captain Kevin Block, "Substance abuse in our area is of major concern, and producing Methamphetamine with children present should be alarming to all our citizens." They ask for the public's help in combating drug trafficking and its production in the area.

Three people were arrested over the weekend after police discovered a methamphetamine lab in Berlin.

On Saturday, police responded to the 100 block of South Swetting Street where they found a meth lab.

Two people were taken into custody on probation violations and a third person on drug charges.

Officers were able to safely disassemble the lab and no one was injured in the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and police say more charges are expected against the suspects.
