Green Bay conducts resident survey near proposed Shipyard development

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - A survey is underway in the neighborhood near the proposed $13 million Shipyard development on Green Bay's west side. As Local 5's Kris Schuller reports, the city is seeking input as it looks to make the entertainment district a reality.

In the neighborhood near the proposed Shipyard project a survey is being conducted, asking residents and business owners like Ken Angle for their thoughts on the multimillion dollar entertainment district on the Fox River and the future development it might bring.

“It's a great mechanism for development, getting everyone to buy-in and explanations and opinions,“ said Angle of Surroundings Home Furnishing Gallery.

Will Peters of Green Bay’s Neighborhood Division says the residents survey asks how familiar are people with development proposals in the area? How will the Shipyard development impact the neighborhood? How should the neighborhood look in the next 20 years?

“We feel the residents should be part of that decision,  help guide that ship as far as what businesses or organizations should come to the area,” said Peters, a neighborhood support specialist.

The potential Shipyard development includes a outdoor events center expected to be financed by the city and Big Top Baseball, as well as a restaurant and indoor concert venue proposed by two private developers.

“We're hoping that will be a catalyst for other development in the neighborhood,” said Peters.

But Alderman Guy Zima who represents the area, says these are questions that should have been asked long ago.

“It's something that probably should have happened many years ago, not now, I think Mayor Schmitt already has his idea of what he wants and now he is trying to find a way to justify it,” Zima said.

“We want to know from the residents that live there - what would they like to see,” Peters said.

Peters says the data collected over the next two weeks will help the city as they work with Big Top Baseball developing an expected cost sharing plan for the project.
