Green Bay keeps Shipyard project afloat after Green Bay Bullfrogs go overboard

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Redevelopment Authority made a confident vote to keep the Shipyard project alive by using $10,000 from the neighborhood enhancement fund to create new drawings of the land, sans baseball stadium.

The city hopes to still have an athletic element in the mix, but would most like to see an outdoor events center and an office/commercial building.

"It is what it is, we're not giving up on the concepts, right," Green Bay mayor Jim Schmitt said. "We're not going to give up on concerts,  we're not going to give up on sports, we're not going to give up on soccer. You know those are things that we're committed to doing, activating that space, having public space along the waterfront and that's what we're going to tighten up."

By moving forward with the project, city leaders believe the waterfront area will grow, similar to the way downtown did along the Fox River when that area was developed.

"Without a baseball stadium there, you can open up that space and it's got a lot more potential so we'll see what happens," Green Bay alderman Randy Scannell said.

Anduzzi's wanted to put one of their restaurants on the site, while the CEO of Festival Foods envisioned building a concert venue there, but neither of them have committed to the Shipyard.

Alderman Joe Moore said he hopes to see those two stay on board, but if not, the city is already reaching out to others.

"Some of these other folks that said 'Look, how can we fit and be a part of the project?" We're actively pursuing them, we're reaching out to them and saying, 'We want to continue to move forward, do you still want to be a part.' I don't know the direction of all those conversations, but there is definitely interest from a lot of people yet," Moore emphasized.

The city will spend the next three months working on the drawings of the new Shipyard project.
