Local group takes bus to protest immigration-related bill in Madison

GREEN BAY, Wis. - A group gathered Thursday morning in Green Bay to head to the Wisconsin State Capitol to protest a proposed bill regarding illegal immigration.

Dozens of community members and supporters left from Peace United Methodist Church in Green Bay (also known as Vida Nueva Methodist Church) for Madison to protest Assembly Bill 190, a bill that's been proposed by the Wisconsin State Legislature.

The bill would outlaw local ordinances that prohibit the enforcement of federal or state law in relation to illegal immigration or immigration status.

A Wisconsin Senate Committee is holding a public hearing on the bill in Madison today.

The protestors claim that the bill would give sweeping powers to local law enforcement and public employees to interrogate, arrest, and deport immigrant community members, and require local law enforcement to comply with unconstitutional I.C.E. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detainer requests.

The bus left Green Bay around 7 a.m., while other buses of protestors also left Manitowoc and Milwaukee this morning.
