Manitowoc Police say vandalism is affecting city parks

Manitowoc, Wis. (WFRV) - Police in Manitowoc have been battling what they call a "tremendous increase" in suspicious activities in city parks. Some of those activities, police say, will not be tolerated anymore.

Manitowoc has a total of 35 parks within the city, great places to relax and unwind, but a small group of people are ruining the parks for others.

"The Police Department has really taken a proactive approach the last couple weeks here," said Chad Scheinoha, operations divisions manager for the Manitowoc Parks Department.

Signs now welcome guests in some Manitowoc parks asking visitors to please respect the rules.

That's because instances of drug use, vandalism, small trash fires, littering, and reckless driving are showing up more and more in the last couple weeks.

"People are intimidating park users as they're driving into the park, yelling profanities, shining flashlights into windows," said Scheinoha. "Pretty much every time we come here, we'd pick up a couple barrels full of garbage off the ground."

The Parks and Rec Department says such acts have created extra maintenance for workers, and has given a bad reputation to some parks.

The Manitowoc Police Department says vandalism is not something new to the city, but has become increasingly worse over time.

"We see people using the parks that are going there on a daily basis that are finding these things along with city workers that are reporting it to us," said Detective Andrew Trilling with the Manitowoc P.D.

Officers are trying to catch those involved by adding more patrols in city parks, and installing 360 degree cameras to monitor what's going on.

They say anyone seen violating rules within a city park could face fines or arrest, and can be excluded from all parks within the city limits.
