Maritime Drive Bluff Restoration in Manitowoc Brings Makeover to Lakeshore

MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) - Every community understands the value of waterfront property - especially if it's near Lake Michigan. That's why folks in Manitowoc are excited - as Local 5's Kris Schuller reports - that a neglected lake shore bluff is getting a needed makeover.

Along Maritime Drive in Manitowoc - the sounds of restoration.  As crews clear an overgrown bluff - making residents like Marilyn Budnik-Burish very happy.

“So much happiness, so much fulfillment, finally,” said Budnik-Burish. “Many neighbors have called in through the years asking when you going to clean it up.”

This week work got underway to restore a neglected 1/2 mile of bluff -  next to Maritime Drive - overlooking Lake Michigan.

“It's right along the lake shore, it's one of our highest traveled area,” said Chad Scheinoha from Manitowoc’s public infrastructure department.

After growing concern from neighbors who were losing their lake views, as well as from city officials, worried by erosion causing overgrown trees to fall into lanes of traffic.

“Just in the last few months we've had two vehicles hit -  with large trucks that have hit tree branches hanging into the road,” said Scheinoha.

It is a project three year in the making - aimed at planting trees and vegetation native to the area to stabilize the hillside and improve the quality of the habitat to attract migratory birds.

“They need places to rest and stop and feed as they migrate in the spring and fall. So, any place along the lake shore is important to birds,” said Jim Knickelbine of Woodland Dunes Nature Center.

A quality of life improvement to beautify the lake shore - an asset that Manitowoc's mayor says you can never overlook.

“That is our greatest asset, that is what is going to bring people here, that is what brings jobs and people here, just the sheer beauty,” said Mayor Justin Nickels.

A project that gives residents like Budnik-Burish back their lake view.

“It's like the whole house has a new window,” she said.
