Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony held in Oshkosh

Event featured attack survivor as guest speaker

OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) - Thursday is the 76th anniversary of one of the most famous events in American history - the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th, 1941.  To remember the occasion, AMVETS Post #7 held a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony at Oshkosh Elks Lodge #292.

The event’s guest speaker was Clyde Stephenson, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked.  Stephenson shared his memories of that day, which changed the course of both U.S. and world history.

"I looked up and this plane was right overhead,” he said, “I don't think it was more than (300) or 400 feet above me. They come in and drop their torpedoes. About an hour or two later, they come back with their dive bombers. We were shooting at 'em by then."

The event also included a reading of the names of Wisconsin service members who perished in the attack, the singing of songs like “Remember Pearl Harbor”, and a rifle salute.
