Second documented sighting of Black Widow spider in Brown County

Two homeowners in New Franken, Wisconsin saw first hand a Black Widow spider, a rare sighting in Brown County, according to a local scientist.

This week Terry Lambert came across a Black Widow spider as she was in her garden. Lambert says when she came across the spider, she was scared, but she heard of them [Black Widow spider] being in Wisconsin.

Lambert, says "I thought is this a Black Widow, they say they're up in Door County, could we have one here on our house?" Lambert captured the spider and took it to Michael Draney a professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for further examination.

Draney who has been studying spiders for over three decades says, "we found one [Black Widow]  and then we reported on it and now people are paying attention and they know that they might be around and they're noticing them."

The professor believes these climate conditions are providing a comfortable place for the spiders to settle in, saying, "probably  the very mild winter followed by this nice warm wet summer has just been really good conditions for the spider."

The professor says if you see a spider you suspect to be a Black Widow to stay away.
