Several area schools head back to class Tuesday

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Across the country, some kids might be feeling extra excited Tuesday morning, others anxious, and their parents are probably feeling the same.

That's because Tuesday is the first day of school for millions of students across the country

Over 21,000 students in the Green Bay Public School District's 26 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, and 5 high schools begin classes the day after Labor Day.

That makes it the fourth largest public school district in the state of Wisconsin.

Many of the schools are having events to mark the occasion, like at Franklin Middle School, where sixth graders will participate in a program called "Where Everybody Belongs, which will feature team-building and communication activities to prepare them for the school year.

And over at Aldo Leopold Community School, there will be a surprise there for students and families at about 7:50 a.m.

And at Washington Middle School, Principal Dennis Christensen will greet new students in the auditorium.

The school has been under a lot of scrutiny after a sixth grade teacher resigned in June, saying the school environment made her fear for her safety.

The teacher claimed multiple incidents of physical violence and verbal threats and harassment at the school.

Principal Christensen will publicly discuss his school's plans for the year.

Tuesday also marks the first day of school in several other districts, like the Appleton School District,
Which has over 16,000 students in its 35 schools.

The Oshkosh, Sheboygan, and Manitowoc school districts all begin the new school year on Tuesday as well.

And a reminder from Appleton Police to be extra careful on the roads today, as officers say they will be keeping an eye on school zones over the next few weeks.

Officials say that whenever a child is within the length of a school zone, the speed limit is reduced to 15 miles per hour.

And they would also like to remind parents dropping off students to follow all parking laws.
