Timber Rattlers will honor a special cancer survivor

Appleton - Jill Garrison and her husband have been a host family for more than a decade, giving players who are often a long way from home, a family to stay with while they play baseball with the team.

In August of 2011 Garrison learned that she had ovarian cancer, but we learned that Garrison is a fighter.

"My glass is actually always half full so I'm that kind of person any way, but everybody around me rallied with unbelievable support," said Garrison.

That included the Timber Rattlers family and all the players that she opened up here home to over the past eleven years.

On Saturday the Timber Rattlers will honor Jill Garrison with a ceremony and Garrison will throw out the first pitch.

David Asher is the first player the Garrison's took in and like many of the players Asher developed a bond with Jill Garrison as she was his pseudo mother while he played here.

Asher actually met his wife in Menasha and lives here today after nearly making it to the big leagues.

"She's a fighter," said Asher. "She told me to hang in there and now she's like a grandmother to my children."

After five months of chemotherapy Jill Garrison beat cancer and it hasn't been back since.
