Truck traffic in the Broadway District

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - Business owners within the Broadway District in Green Bay say they've had enough of truck traffic.  And they told Local 5's Kris Schuller they plan to keep fighting for a traffic study which could ultimately remove Broadway’s truck route designation.

Two years ago Mark Moran and his business partner opened Shift Visuals within the Broadway District.  And while he knew there was truck traffic on Broadway - he didn't realize how much.

“Throughout the working day there is heavy truck traffic through here, it's a dangerous situation.” Said Moran.

Trucks use Broadway because it is a truck route - a designation held for the past four decades. But On Broadway Inc.'s executive director says with rebirth of the Broadway District, a truck route that creates excessive noise and puts pedestrians at risk, needs to be addressed.

“Overwhelmingly this shows up as the top two or three things I hear about from businesses -  is their concerns about truck traffic and the need to do something about it,” said Johnson.

Last night Johnson went before Green Bay's Improvement and Services Committee seeking approval of  a proposed $43,0000 truck-traffic study on Broadway between Mather and Ninth streets.  The goal to see where the trucks are coming from, where they are heading and where they might be rerouted.

“Until we know where these trucks are coming and going we can't really take the next step,” said Johnson.

The committee though voted the proposal down.

“We need to get this study done, we need the information,” said Alderman Randy Scannell.

Scannell says he has heard the concerns of business owners like Moran in the district and will try to get the funding approved at next week's City Council meeting.

“It's unfortunate this is the price tag it's coming in at, but if we want to move forward this is the first step, we have to bite the bullet and take it,” Scannell said.

“There is a problem down here, we need to do something about it and the truck study is the first step in solving that problem,” Johnson said.
