Now that the nice weather is finally here, people will be enjoying the sunshine walking around.
Why not lace up your shoes for a good cause.
Joining us this morning is Niki Grossheim with the MG Walk that is coming up next weekend.
What is myasthenia gravis?
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscle groups. The prevalence of MG in the united states is estimated to be about 20/100,000 population. However, MG is probably under diagnosed and the prevalence may be higher. Myasthenia gravis occurs in all races, both genders, and at any age. Common symptoms can include: A drooping eyelid, blurred or double vision, slurred speech, difficulty chewing and swallowing, weakness in the arms and legs, chronic muscle fatigue, difficulty breathing.
How does it effect people who suffer from MG?
There is no known cure for mg, but there are effective treatments that allow many-but not all-people with MG to lead full lives. Although the treatments will not cure mg, patients may have significant improvement in their muscle weakness. Mg affects each person differently requiring individualized treatment approaches and goals.
Why is it so important to get the word out about this dibilitating disease?
Imagine a debilitating disease that impacts every aspect of your life. Then imagine what it's like when no one has ever heard of your illness. That's what life can be like for people with myasthenia gravis. The MG community would like to make people aware of what mg is and how it affects people on a daily and even more often hourly basis.
Tell us about the northern wisconsin m-g walk.
The mg walk is on May 7th at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. Registration is at 5pm with the walk starting at 6pm. The walk is a short 1/2 mile or a full mile option. They will recognize the local walk hero Rachel Doherty. There will be a silent auction and bucket raffle at the mg walk as well.
What is the purpose of the walk?
The mg walk campaign generates awareness, renews hope, and creates a community of support while raising important funds for the myasthenia gravis foundation of america. The mg walk allows people with mg to talk about their diagnosis, many for the first time, while experiencing an overwhelming amount of support from their loved ones.
What will the funds raised at the walk be used for?
The funds raised with the MG Walks is used to start research projects to study myasthenia gravis and hopefully find a cure. The money is also used to fund doctoral fellowships in neurology with an emphasis in MG. The MG walk money also helps pay for educational materials for patients and support groups they might attend.
Can people still sign up? Or donate? How?
People can register anytime online or even right at the walk at 5pm. There is no registration fee for the walk but any donation is appreciated. The website is www.Mgwalk.Org/northernwisconsin/
