WFRV hosts the 8th Congressional District Debate

The debate was held on October 17, 2016

GREEN BAY, Wis. - WFRV-TV and Local 5 News presented a live televised debate between the candidates seeking to represent Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The candidates, Republican Mike Gallagher and Democrat Tom Nelson, discussed the issues critical to the people who call Northeastern Wisconsin home. Some of the topics included social security, national security and terrorism, minimum wage, and veterans issues.

This open seat in the 8th District is due to Congressman Reid Ribble’s decision not to seek reelection.

The moderator was Local 5 anchor Tom Zalaski.  In addition to anchoring the 5, 6, and 10PM news at WFRV, Mr. Zalaski also hosts Local 5’s “Newsmaker Sunday” program, where both candidates have appeared previously.

WFRV TV Vice-President and General Manager Mike Smith said, “Presenting a primetime debate on a CBS station such as this is critical to our local mission here at WFRV.  We’re proud our team was able to put together a proposed debate that both candidates are on board with.”

WFRV News Director Kevin Osgood, who will be the debate’s executive producer said, “This was an opportunity for the voters to hear policy ideas directly from the candidates so they can understand the differences between them and make a more informed choice.”
