Wisconsin lawmakers back President Trump's tough stance with North Korea

Green Bay, Wis. (WFRV) - Wisconsin lawmakers are reacting to the growing tensions between the U.S., its allies and North Korea. Local 5's Kris Schuller reports they support President Trump in his efforts to deal with the growing nuclear threat.

A day after North Korea  announced its military is developing plans to land four missiles off the U.S territory of Guam, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) took to the airwaves saying he supports the tough talk coming from the White House.

“Diplomatic speak hasn't worked. You finally have a president who is saying we're not going to put up with it. Strategic patience is over,” said Johnson while on CNN.

This latest threat from North Korea comes after President Trump  issued this promise to the nation should it continue to threaten America with its ballistic missiles.

“They will be met with fire and fury,” said President Trump.

“I think it’s clear that the administration has demonstrated it will meet violence with an overwhelming response,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin).

Congressman Gallagher says past presidents have done little to stop North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Now Kim Jong-un has intercontinental ballistic missiles - capable of hitting the U.S.

“Deterrence relies on our would-be adversaries, understanding that we have both the capability and the will power to decisively defeat aggressions,” said Gallagher.

“I would advise North Korea, China, Russia and anybody that has influence and supports North Korea, to pay attention to what this president is saying,” said Johnson.

“Our best hope now is to ratchet up the pressure on North Korea and the Chinese and to convince Kim Jong-un through our words and actions -  that if he continues the present course - he will face the end of his regime,” Gallagher said.

Japan - one of America's closest Asian allies, says if missiles are fired at Guam through their airspace, they will shoot them down.
